CRICKET AT PERTH M.C.C. BATSMEN SHINE HAMMOND IMPRESSIVE ißy Tciesraph—Presa Association —Copyright] Received Oct. 18, 7.5 p.m. PERTH, Oct. 18. Continuing England’s innings against Western Australian, Wyatt and Hammond yesterday completed a second-wicket partnership of 221 runs. Hammond gave an impressive exhibition, scoring 141 runs .in 180 minutes. Once having passed the century he discarded safe methods and hit two sixes, the first into the members’ reserve, where the ball broke a window in tjie players' dress-ing-room. Hammond threw his innings away, but was satisiied that he had had sufficient practice. He gave chances when 81 and 129. His timing throughout was superb, his driving on t.Te offside being particularly fine. Wyatt, in contrast, was extremely dull, his painstaking innings of 106 runs occupying 282 minutes. He aimed to secure useful practice, and did not accept all opportunities to score an occasional run except a crisp off-drive or a hefty pull. After tea, Hardstaff and Fishlock, the left-hander, were making their Australian debut as partners. Both had early escapes. Fishlock's strong onside shots included a six. Hardstaff, after early uncertainty, especially against the fast bowler, Halcombe, settled down to play attractively, his driving through the covers being admired. Several times he lifted the ball to open spaces beyond the bowler. Worthington, who had adopted some of Hammond’s methods, showed satisfactory form. Despite Wyatt’s slowness the team maintained a fast rate of scoring, and five sixes were hit. Halcombe was the unlucky bowler, having several chances missed in the slips. The weather was sunny and the wicket in splendid order. Scores are as follow: Western Australia. First Innings.
