NO JUSTIFICATION

BRITISH DICTATORSHIP DEFENCE OF DEMOCRACY LONDON, Oct. 16. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Samuel Hoare, speaking at Hitchin, said, “Two bodies in the United Kingdom wish to discredit democratic Government and build up dictatorships, namely, the Communists ano the Fascists. Neither has any roots in British soil. We shall not ignore them. We are determined to show that ancient democracy can govern. We are not prepared to stand aside and allow foreign-inspired minorities to assume symbols of the powers of the Government. There is no justification in Britain for dictatorships.” Commenting on foreign policy, he said: “Ever since Germany left the League we have entered a new and dangerous chapter. Most of the world seems to have gone mad.” Britain was not prepared to intervene in Spain, he said, because it meant risk of a European war.
