Tl RAKINA CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY The fifth birthday of the Turakina Women's Institute was held in the Town Hall on October 15, Mrs Knox presiding over almost a full attendance of members and visitors from Wanganui. Federation, Aramoho, Okoia, Kaitoke, Silverhope, and Mrkirikiri North; also a visitor being present from Papua, New Guinea. The business of the meeting was made as brief as possible. It was decided to give a donation of £1 towards the Health Stamp Campaign, and that members approach the W.D.F.U. in an endeavour to combine in an effort for the country candidate for the District Health Camp. Mrs Brine gave a short talk on institute affairs, and a reminder of the half-yearly federation meeting to be held at Fordell on October 20, commencing at 10.30 a.m. Items given during the afternoon by Mrs Parr (song), Mrs R. Wisknowsky and Miss L. Karatu (elocution), and Highland dancing by Mr H. Glasgow, were greatiy enjoyed. The ladies were presented with Victorian posies, and Mr Glasgow with a buttonhole. Afternoon tea was served, the five candles on the beautiful birthday cake were lit by Mrs King, the oldest member, and blown out by little Bruce ’ Cairns, and the cake then cut by Mrs Brine, District Federation president. Mrs Oldsworth gave a demonstra- : tion in the old art of spinning, and told of many simple and inexpensive ways of dying the wool, and she also showed garments, scarves and handbags, some knitted and some of handwoven material. A hearty vote of I thanks was accorded in the usual way, and pretty bouquets were presented to Mrs Oldsworth, Mrs Brine and Mrs King. A stall of goods did excellent business, and the small leather goods from the R.S.A. found a ready sale. The singing of the National Anthem brought a happy afternoon to a close. Hostesses for November will be Mesdames Wisknowsky, senr., and Cains, Misses Wrigglesworth and Whale. Competitions, vase of four different roses and soft toys for the Christmas party. An enjoyable dance was held in the evening, non-dancers playing cards. Mr Kirk supplied the greater part of the musical programme. A surprise visit by a musical party from Wanganui was enjoyed by all. The prizes presented by Mrs Kronast for the Monte Carlo dance were won by Mr and Mrs Henderson. Mrs Knox thanked the musicians and all who had helped to make ? pleasant evening, and with the singing of the National Anthem midnight saw all homeward bound. MANGAAVEKA MEETING The October meeting of the Mangaweka W.I. was held n Phillips’ Hall on Tuesday, the 6th, the Oddfellows’ Hall being unavailable. Mrs Ginnane presided over a large attendance, and some Taihape visitors were welcomed. A good number of toys was collected for the children in the Leper Colony. Members were asked to assist the Health Camp Campaign by using health stamps when they are issued in November. Misses E. Crawford and A. Gardner were chosen as delegates to attend the first council meeting of the Ruapehu Federation in Taihape. Mrs Weymouth read an article about trees and Mrs Pairman an extract from H. V. Morton’s “In Search of Scotland.” At the next meeting, Mrs Ferber and Mrs Travis, senr., will read what they consider the most interesting article seen during the month. Mrs Nicholson gained the prize for the best article made from sugar-bag, and Miss I. Dickinson that for the best bulbs.

Hostesses were Mrs Jarret and Misses A. and M. Gardner, who were assisted by Mrs Warrilow and Miss A. Warrilow. Mrs F. Billinghurst demonstrated the making of cane trays, and the Rev. King (Taihape) gave a gardening talk which was much appreciated.
