LIGHTWEIGHT’S SUCCESS WIN FOR NORTH WIND T.A.T.C. MEETING CONCLUDES Received Oct. 18, 7.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 18. There was an enormous attendance for the third day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting. The official figures give those present as 63,225. which is a record. The weather was fine and bright. The despised outsider North Wind finished brilliantly to win the Caulfield Cup. He was purchased a few j weeks ago for 500 guineas by Colonel I Cohen with a view to to-day’s race. ! North Wind gave a poor display in the Herbert Power Handicap on the first day of the meeting, running last, and his chance was discounted. He ’«• trained by Cecil Godby, who won previously with Gaine Carrington and Purser. Silver Standard ran a great race and was only beaten in the last few strides. Talking put up a good effort anti made most of the pace. Gay Blonde finished strongly in fourth place. Desert Chief and Gay Circle ran satisfactory races but Golden Promise never looked dangerous. One Whetu was always near the real. Percival, rider of On? Whetu, slates the horse finished well and may have gained a place if he had been able to begin faster. Another rank outsider. Arbalest, outstayed the hot favourite Siren to win the Burwood Handicap. It was his first success. Mr. W. R. Kemball’s Bazaar finished brilliantly but just failed in the Mona Nursery. Ena Showed improved stamina compared with last week. Barametric finished brilliantly on the rails in the Gwyn Nursery and beat the pacemakers, Nightguard and Sir Grey. The New Zealander Silver Bond, having its first outing, made the pace early and gave a promising ef- i fort. Royal Quex was never dangerous. Seymour had a runaway victory in the Wyuna Steeplechase. His rider. Fullarton, won last year on Wirrate. Cynical Kid made up ground to run a poor fourth Ogwell, winner of the Windsor Handicap, completed a double for his rider H. Badger.
