W.D.F.U.

MONTHLY MEETING ACTIVITIES FOR COUNTRY QUEEN The Wanganui branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union held their monthly meeting last Wednesday, Mrs McPhail presiding over a good attendance of members. The president expressed her sincere regret at the loss, since last meeting, of so many friends and supporters, and all stood in silence as a gesture of sympathy with the relatives and friends of the late Mrs H. McDonald, Mrs White, Mrs Babbage, Mrs Jessie Hope Gibbons and Mr F. Hockly. It was intimated that the recentlyelected Dominion president of the Farmers' Union, Mr Mulholland, would address farmers and all interest, in the W.D.F.U. Rooms next Wednesday, when a good attendance of members was requested. Mrs McPhail reported that a successful tree-planting day nad been spent at “Marangai” last week, and spoke of the kindness of Mr and Mrs D. L. Blyth in providing a delicious afternoon tea at their home., for al) the “diggers.” Several members had helped the Mayoress (Mrs W. J. Rogers) with the contributions for, and the packing of. cases of “good cheer" for the inmates of the Porirua Mental Home, and a further appeal for the unfortunate dwellers on Makogai Leper Island met with a warm response from those present, it being decided that the Wanganui branch would send a Christmas box for the lonely sufferers. Reporting on her visit ot the local hospital last week, Mrs McPhail mentioned several cases of country women who had expressed their appreciation of what this part of the W.D.F.U. work meant to sufferers, like themselves, who were very many miles from home and had scarcely hoped to see a welcoming smile among so many strangers. To aid the funds for the country candidate in the Health Camp campaign, an exhibition of antiques and a parade of bygone fashions will be held in the rooms (above McGruer’s) on Wednesday, October 28, and a request was made for contributions to either section of the intended display. It was decided that this day would be suitable also as a “book” day appeal for the Dominion Book Club. Contributions can be left at the rooms any Wednesday or Friday and will be gratefully received.
