MONTREAL’S “FIRST SHIP.”

Shipping is the life blood of Montreal, as it is of every major city of the world, and here it is hard to visualise the difficulties the Canadian port, with a river that is closed for months of the year by ice. To that city the annual opening of the port to sh.ppmg is an important event—so important indeed that annually there are offered trophies to the master of the first ocean-going vessel that berths there. This year records were broken when the British freighter West Wales was berthed on April 13, the earliest berthing date since 1902, and it was news that no icebreaker was needed to pilot her in. Io the master of the West Wales was presented the golil-headed cane and the silver cup that i» the annual “’first’’ prize, and a silver cup was presented also to the Norwegian freighter Lido on April 16. To qualify for the cups the vessels have to come from a trans-Atlan-tic port, or from a port in the Gulf of Mexico or further south.
