GOLF
A ONE-CLUB PLAYER NOT NEW DICTUM TRUE BUT UNINTERESTING Miss Gloria Minoprio, the 25-year-old golfer who competed in the English women’s close championship play ing with a No. 1 iron, says she is convinced that a successful game can be built up with one club. If' she were to use three clubs, a No. 1 or No. 2, a No. 5, and a pullet, she would probably achieve better results; so would the majority of players—men included —but even then ttie game would be exceedingly uninteresting. Most of the fun in golf comes from getting the right shot at the right time from a variety of implements each designed for a specific purpose. There is always one club best suited to the shot called for. The difficulty is to get that shot just right. That is why nobody ever really masters the game. It is easy to master one club, but very difficult to master a set of clubs. The master of one club could not possibly compete with the master of a set of clubs, but might easily beat anyone who has only partly mustered each club in a set. To most players three or four perfect shots in a round mean far more than getting round in a low score. A oneclub player could be quite happy with a hockey stick. TAWHERO CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINALISTS.
