QUEST FOR PENSION

ELDERLY MANS LONG RIDE MISSION UNSUCCESSFUL [ Per Precs Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 13. Lieutenant John Holmes, seventyone years old, and a relief worekr of Cambridge, arrived at Wellington today after cycling 400 miles from his home in the hope that he would be able to arrange for a war pension. His mission was unsuccessful because of the laws of the land. Holmes was quite undistressed, and fully appreciating the position intends pedelling his way back home again. He left Ca’mbridge last Friday week and averaged forty miles each day actual travelling. Although a veteran of several wars, and gave valuable service to the Defence Department in the Great War, he is ineligible for a war pension because he, at no time, went overseas with the New Zealand forces.
