VIOLENT OUTBURST

SPEECHES IN ALSACE ATTACKS ON HITLER AMBASSADOR TO PROTEST BRITISH MINISTERS CONCERNED ]By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright} Received Oct. 13, 11.20 p.m. BERLIN, Oct. 12. The German Ambassador to Paris lias been instructed formally to protest to the French Government regarding Communist speeches in Alsace on Sunday, > chiefly that of M. Thorez, who allegedly insulted Herr Hitler and the German people by quoting extracts from Mein Kampf interpreting them to mean that Hitler was solely aiming at the annihilation of France. M. Thorez is also said to have reproached M. Blum for “capitulating to blackmail by Hitler’s agents” in limiting Communist meetings, and allegedly distorted Hitler’s recent speech into a declaration that it was wholesome for the worker to go hungry and that Germany might, by war, have an opportunitj of regaining her former posi tion in the world. The newspapers have made a united attack on M. Thorez, who they have denounced as a liar, slanderer and sub-human scroundrel. The Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent says that British Ministers are concerned lest serious complications follow M. Thorez's speech. Probably the British Ambassador at Paris will be asked to convey to the French Government an expression of the British view, with the earnest hope that everything possible will be done to prevent the incident developing. The Daily Mail’s Berlin correspondent says that Count von Welszech, Ambassador to Paris, has been instructed to point out that it is contrary to international usage to attack the head of another State. GERMAN ARMAMENTS MORE ESSENTIAL THAN FOOD PRIVATIONS ADVOCATED Received Oct. 13, 10.50 p.m. BERLIN, Oct. 12. Germany’s slogan to-day must be “Retain guns instead of butter,” declared Herr Hess, Hitler's deputy, evidently preparing the Germans for serious shortages of foodstuffs during the winter time. He added: “We are ready, if necessary, to eat a little less pork and fat and a couple of eggs fewer than usual, and the foreign exchange thereby saved will be used for rearmament, in which Germany will go the limit despite privations. Herr Hitler does not do things by halves. Every new gun, tank and aeroplane will give security to the German mother that her children will not be slaughtered in an accursed war or tortured by the Bolsheviks. Moreover, the world must grant Germany the possibility of obtaining raw materials from her own colonies, or Germany will aim at self-sufficiency. It is in the interests of the world to surrender the colonies to Germany, or we will be forced to export at any price, injuring other exporters.”
