LAWN TENNIS

ST JOHN'S CLUB Cl BRENT TOPIC'S The keenness of members was evidenced by the number of players on the courts over the week-end despite weather conditions, which were unsettled. Saturday afternoon commenced with rain, but the courts were dry by 2.30, and players, were hampered by neither sun nor wind. One of the outstanding games played over the week-end was between Messrs. Barkman and McArthur (tne latter of Wellington), and Lampe and Rhodes, the honours being slightly in favour of the former pair. Ihe match was characterised by heavysmashing, cross-court drives and angle shots, all four playing well for so early in the season. Miss B. Pownall and Miss M. Pawson gave glimpses of good form in a close singles game. Messrs. R. Broad and White played a marathon match, the former taking the honours. He is likely to be one of Wanganui's future association representative players; his flat drive is working well, and he now needs experience in overhead work. The lists for the various club events are now posted in the pavilion, and it is hoped that entries will be put in as soon as possible to enable a start to be made very soon. Labour Day tournament is a coming attraction for that is the time when golfers ground their clubs ana take out the old tennis racquet or buy a new one, as the case may be; and this year it will take the form 01 a mixed doubles handicap event. Mr. Lampe has generously donated, trophies for the winners. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided as an added attraction. Those present over the week-end included:—Misses Tomasi, McDonal;, M. and H. Missen, Pawson, Pownai , T. Cox, Hair, Gillies, Kjoss, and Dei ves. Messrs. Barkham, I. Basse!t, A. Bassett-Smith, Lampe, Rhodes, A. N Campbell, McArthur (Wellington ■, Broad, Evans Thompson, Smaller, Kearney, Clemanson.
