MONTHLY MEETING HELD CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS The monthly meeting of the Marton Borough Council was held last evening in the Council Chambers, the Mayor of Marton (Mr F. Purnell) presiding. Also present were Crs. W. J. Mogridge, A. A. Mclndoe, T. Barton, A. J. B. Sicely, A. Honeyman. W. B. Langston. K. A. Williams, G. B. Gregory, and Mr C. C. McDonald (town clerk). Correspondence A circular letter was received from the Minister of Transport (Hon. R. Semple) relative to the 30 m.p.h. speed limit in towns, stating that experience so far indicates the desirability of seeking the co-operation of the motoring public and educating motorists in the observance of the |new regulations and asking the council to instruct traffic inspectors to re- I frain from taking prosecutions except . in cases where a warning has not pro- | duced the desired result and suggest- | Ing that a traffic inspector should be | “the guide and friend” of motorists and do their utmost to secure co- i operation.—The council is to reply that they will be only too willing to I co-operate with the Minister. A circular letter was received from the Minister of Transport relative to the taxicab and town carrier business requesting that no further applications be granted in the meantime except in exceptional cases pending the committee’s recommendations being made available. —The Minister is to be advised that the borough already has a by-law limiting the number 01 taxis in Marton. A circular letter was received from the Municipal Association advising that the date for the opening of the conference has been fixed for Tuesday. March 9, 1937, and will be held at Timaru and advising that all remits should be forwarded to the secretary not later than Saturday, November 21, 1934.—Referred to the Finance Committee to draft remits for consideration at the next meeting. J. C. Williamson Picture Corporation wrote asking permission to screen a programme entitled “San Francisco” on Christmas Day, stating that this programme has been viewed by head office and is entirely suitable for the occasion, further suggesting that the programme would not commence until 8.30 p.m.—Permission was granted. Mr G. W. Grey’s application for the position of caretaker of the swim- : ming baths for the current season was referred to Crs. Barton and Mogridge to make a recommendation at the next meeting. The district secretary’s application applying for the use of the park on Labour Day, 26th inst., for the holding of a Bible Class rally, was granted. The N.Z.R. wrote advising that the total gas purchased for the year ended March 31, 1936, exceeded 450,000 cubic feet, and asking the council to allow a credit on the next account as provided in the agreement.—The request was granted Accounts and salaries paid during the month and amounting to £856 8s 6d were approved, and accounts and salaries amounting to £235 13s were passed for payment. The treasurer's statement of receipts from September 12 to October 12, showed revenue totalling £1226 17s 3d, the principal items being: Rates £483 17s, Town Hall £9O, gas, etc. £3Ol 3s Id, water fees, etc. £65 3s. ; Building permits were issued for a new building, house, alterations and ! a new shed. The nightwatchman reported that 1 the town was quiet and orderly. Tuesday, November 24, was fixed ' as the last day for the payment of i rates and water fees for the current i year.
