With red flags and banners, Communists shouting "Smash Fascism” and "Down with war, ’ conducted what was described as a vistory march from Tower Hill through the East End. They encountered trouble in Victoria Park, where, among the waiting crowd, a hundred hands rose up in the Fascist salute and fifty young men, shouting "Up with Fascism," charged into the processionists and pulled down a banner, knocking down two escorting policemen. A great tight followed for possession of the banner. A squad of police charged with batons and several arrests were made. A man who staggered from the crowd with his face bleeding said he had been slashed with a razor. Several other persons received cuts and were attended to by ambulance workers. Communists held three meetings. Liverpool Demonstration. A gang of youths smashed the windows of fifteen Jewish tradesmen in the Mile End Road, East London, before the arrival of a bus load o. policemen. The whole of the Liverpool mounted police and a thousand on foot were engaged during a Fascist march through the centre of the city. It L estimated that a crowd of 50,000 lined the route. Angry scenes took place at several points. A Fascist flagbearer was hit on the head with a stone. Police in Line Street drew theii batons and made many arrests. A further message says that the Jew baiting gang wrecked and looted 25 shops in Mile End Road and attacked Samuel Jelan, a hairdresser, who was standing in his shop door, and threw him through the window of a nearby shop. They hurled a little girl on top of him. Jeien took the little girl to safety and the gang went off shouting, “Hail, Mosley’ Down with the Yids!” Fourteen were arrested. Sir Oswald Mosley, speaking at the Liverpool meeting after the procession, complained of an organised attempt throughout the country to deny the Fascists right of speech. Asked what the Fascist attitude was towards the Jews, Sir Oswald replied: “Those who put the interests of Jewry before the interests of Britain will have to get out.
