THE STEAMER MATAI
NINE OF CREW LEAVE OBJECTED TO CARRYING STORES [Per Press /istuclatlon] AUCKLAND, Oct. 8. Six stewards and three cooks employed on the Government lighthouse steamer Matai to-night gave the master of the vessel, Captain Burgess, 24 hours’ notice of their leaving the ship. The men’s decision was a sequel to their refusal to carry stores on board in the afternoon. The captain refused to comment on the matter to-night, but the mon alleged that the captain was adamant that they would have to carry sacks of potatoes on board, each sack weighing 529c\vt. The men claimed that in the Cooks and Stewards’ Award it was provided that members of the union should not carry stores weighing over 70ibs. “We were given the option of getting off the ship or carrying the stores on board,” said one man, “and we decided to give notice.” The Matai arrived to-day from the Hauraki Gulf and is scheduled to leave on Monday for Wellington, via the North Cape and West Coast.
