WANTED—A PUBLIC HALL
'PJIE backbone of the army is the non-commissioned man, says Kipling, and at the military ball, promoted by the Sergeants’ Mess of the Wanganui Garrison, it was made pla : ' that for organising ability and a capacity to get things done, the noncommissioned men of Wanganui are well up to standard. It is safe to say that everything human was done to put the Drill Hall into trim to make it fit for the holding of a ball. The organisers of the effort are to be congratulated. But their efforts only made the more plain the inadequacy of the Drill Hall as a venue for important social gatherings. The floor is uneven and tiring for dancing, while the general accommodation leaves very much to be desired. From the outside, of course, it is appalling, an index of its deereptitude within. It is about time that Wanganui insisted that the ancient and outworn fabric no longer encumbers the eivie centre and that it make way for a more appropriate City Hall.
