WANGANUI ASSOCIATION SEASON CONCLUDES DISAPPOINTING GAMES The Wanganui Hockey Association’s fixtures were brought to a close last Saturday in brilliantly fine weather. The grounds were in fair condition, but the display of hockey was very disappointing. Hinemoa and Y.M.C.A., who were runners-up in the men’s senior competition, played a drawn game for the Thompson Cup, there being no score. Kaiwhaiki also met Old Girls in the final of the women’s A section, and emerged winners by 4 goals to 3. In the junior six-a-side tournament for the Miller Cup, Gonville A defeated Technical B after extra time had been played, by a hit' behind. Hinemoa 0, Y.M.C.A. 0. This game was a most disappointing one, and it was entirely spoilt by the hard hitting tactics adopted by both sides. Hinemoa pressed right from the start, but they found the defence to be very sound. Y.M.C.A. eventually secured the ball, and sent it out to Windle, who made a fine run to the Hinemoa circle, where B. Mclntyre intercepted and conceded a penalty corner, which yvas well cleared. Even play followed for some time, and then Howatson, with a smart sprint, reached the circle, but his shot went wide. Hinemoa then pressed, and L. Stewart was prominent in some smart wing play and a shot was cleverly stopped by Olsen. The ball then went to Wallace, but his shot went wide. Stewart continued to send in some hard centering shots, but these were quickly smothered. Y.M.C.A. had a good chance to score, but B. Mclntyre saved brilliantly. The spell ended shortly afterwards. In the second spell Y.M.C.A. did most of the attacking, but fast following up robbed them of many chances of scoring. Smallwood obstructed a good deal in this spell, and was frequently penalised. B. Mclntyre, at left full-back for Hinemoa, saved his side time and again, and some of his stick work was really brilliant. Hinemoa made a tactical error in playing L. Stewart as centreforward in this half. He '.-as up against solid opposition in Smallwood. In the concluding stages of the game, V. Latham (Hinemoa) received a good pass and beat Myers, but his shot hit the side of the net. The game ended with Y.M.C.A. attacking strongly, but with little semblance of combination. The game was controlled by Messrs J. S. D. Tizard and W. F. Hartnell. Kaiwhaiki v. Old Girls. The game between Kaiwhaiki and Old Girls was also a disappointing one. neither side showing any really good combination. Old Girls were unlucky in not evening the scores in the second half. Old Girls opened the attack and for quite a long time had Kaiw’haiki on the defensive. In one of their onslaughts a great struggle occurred in front of the goal, and tw T o of the Maori players fell in attempting to save, but the ball rolled into the goal. Old Girls 1, Kaiwhaiki 0. From this stage, Kaiwhaiki had much the better of the game. M. Hyland received the ball from a free-hit, and with a brilliant run equalised for Kaiwhaiki. Hot work round the Old Girls’ circle saw Mrs Gray effect some brilliant saves. From a penalty corner. ! M. Wiwi secured and sent in a hot ! one and put her side in the lead. This i was followed shortly afterwards by i another goal from the stick of P. | Joseph, who went in fast from the i left. M. Wiwi, from a brilliant solo , effort, scored Kaiwhaiki’s fourth goal, the spell ending Kaiwhaiki 4, Old Girls 1. Old Girls did most of the attacking in the second half, and some brilliant clearances were made by the Kaiwhaiki defenders. B. Ecott went in fast from the left, and sent in a hard one, which was stopped by the goalie, but the ball trickled into the goal. Kaiwhaiki 4. Old Girls 2. Old Girls continued to press, and some hot circle work was witnessed.. B. Ecott again scored in a great melee in the circle mouth. Kaiwhaiki 4, Old Girls 3.
