SATURDAY WORK
reserved decisions given [Per PreMS Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 29. in its judgments on the question of i the 40-hour week, tne Arbitration . Court reserved, in respect of certain ; industries, its decision regarding the ; permissibility of work on Saturdays. | The following reserved decisions have I now been announced: — Boot and Shoe Manufacturing.—ln I the case of staffs in wholesale manu- ■ factoring houses Saturday work must j be eliminated. In the case of staffs in I workrooms attached to or working in conjunction with retail establishments and engaged in making adjustments, alterations, or repairs to boots or shoes or making bespoke boots or shoes, Saturday work will be permitted. Clothing Trade.- The general view of the Court is that in the case of staffs in wholesale manufacturing houses, Saturday work should be eliminated and that in lhe case of staffs in workrooms attached to or working in conjunction with retail establishments, Saturday work should be permitted. The problem presents some difficulties by reason of the wide difference in the circumstances of individual businesses. Beyond expressing the above general view the Court makes no positive order eliminating Saturday work and leaves it to each firm to carry out the 40-hour week on five days or on five and a-half days as seems best, suited to its individual circumstances. Sawmilers, Boxm’akers and Timberyard Merchants. —Saturday work will be permitted in box-making factories, and will also be permitted in timberyards in respect of kiln-drying attendants and employees required for lhe supply of dunnage for snipping. "As to bush sawmills, since time may be lost through adverse weather conditions, the Court thinks that the right to work on Saturdays may be desirable and for the present it makes an order permitting Saturday work, but reserves to the parties tne right to bring up this question of Saturday work in bush sawmills for review at their next Conciliation Council proceedings.
