Powdrell, St. John’s Hill, are visiting Rotorua for the golf tournament. Mrs Colin Gardner has returned Hawera after a visit to Wanganui. Miss Joan Hammond is visiting her mother, Mrs R. Hammond, The Terrace, Wellington. * * * * Miss Jean Richards, of Marton, is visiting Mrs H. P. Richmond, Remuera, Auckland. Mr and Mrs J. Craig, Wangaehu, have left by car for Rotorua to attend the veteran golf tournament. Mr and Mrs H. Lawrence, of Invercargill, were in Wanganui during the week-end. Mrs E. M. Silk, College Street, left on Saturday on a motoring trip to Auckland, and will spend some time at Kawau. Mrs Rix Trott, of Marton, is spending a holiday in New Plymouth. Mrs H. Flower and Mrs D. Tabor-Gregory, of Auckland, has been re-appointed adjudicator of the dancing section of the Hamilton competitions to be held in May, 1937. 4 1 4 s Mr and Mrs A. E. Godwin, and Masters Reg. and Edgar Godwin, are Wanganui visitors to Rotorua, where Mrs Godwin is competing in the veterans’ golf tournament. An artistic fashion parade of spring frocks was presented on the stage of the Regent Theatre on Saturday evening, in conjunction with the presentation of the Paramount Week Picture “Desire.” The frocking was the work of the D.1.C., while a pleasing microphonic commentary was made by Miss A. O’Donnell. Miss Sybil Phillips, the Aucklander who won the soprano vocal championship at the Sydney Eisteddfod last week, is 23 years of age. At the Auckland Grammar School, where she received her education, she played leading parts in musical productions, commencing her public singing career at the age of 12. Later she won championships at the Competition Society’s festivals and played a prominent part in musical activities. Miss Phillips was a member of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society, and played in a number of productions. At the Wellington competitions last year she scored a success, and she also toured New Zealand with the J. C. Williamson Company which played “Roberta” and “Our Miss Gibbs.” ” OVERSEAS ENGAGEMENTS LONDON, July 29. The engagement is announced this week between Mr Nigel Poett, Durham Light Infantry, only son of the late Major-General Poett, of Filleigh House, Bath, and Julia, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs E. J. Herrick, of Lindisfarne, Hastings, states a London correspondent. The engagement is announced between John Holmes Jellett, of H.M. Naval Base, Singapore, son of the late Mr H. H. Jellett and Mrs Jellett, and Frances Sybil, daughter of the late Mr E. B. Graham and Mrs F. E. Robertson, of Wellington. The engagement is announced between John William Tweedie, Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, eldest son of the late Colonel William Tweedie, C.M.G., C.8.E., and of Mrs Tweedie, Beechwood, Dunblane, Perthshire, and Sheila Mary, only daughter of Brigadier-General T. R. C. Hudson, C. 8., and Mrs Hudson, of Pyle Hill, Newbury, Berkshire. Both Captain Tweedie and Miss Hudson are well known in New Zealand, the former having been aide-de-camp to Lord Bledisloe, the latter having been resident at Government House for some months.
