The match is to take - place on Spriggens Park, and the - challengers have great hopes of - lifting it in view oi the fact that Wanganui will be at less than full strength because of the major representative fixture with Manawatu at Feilding. The Pownall Trophy has occasioned keen rivalry between the component unions of the district over which the Wanganui Rugby Union holds jurisdiction—Wanganui Metropolitan, Taihape, Rangitikei and Wairoa. Wai-nui-a-rua has not entered the contest tin recent years, at any rate. The ’’ Wanganui Metropolitan Union won 5 the Trophy from Rangitikei in 1932. " The Trophy was presented by Mr G. t H. Pownall in 1920 to intensify the 3 spirit of competition between the vari- { ous sub-unions in the Wanganui diss trict. It has since been competed for e as under:— 3 1920: Taihape beat Rangitikei by 11 points to 9; Rangitikei beat Taihape by 8 to 6. 1921: Rangitikei beat Taihape by 6 a to 5. . 1922-23-24: Taihape helu the trophy. e 1925: Taihape defeated Rangitikei bv y 29 to 16. s 1926: Rangitikei beat Taihape by 3 e to nil. 1927-28: Twice won by Taihape e against Rangitikei. 1929: Taihape beat Rangitikei. 6 1931: Taihape again beat Rangitikei i (18 to 11). 4 i 1932: Rangitikei beat Taihape and i Metropolitan beat Rangitikei, at 1 i Marton by 16 to 15. | Since that date, except for a short ; | period in one season, when Rangitikei held the trophy until a return match was played, the Metropolitan Union has been the holder. Saturday’s match may end the city’s supremacy. Taihape challenged this year and was defeated by 34 to 14.
