YOUNG FARMERS CLUB DEBATE AT WHENUAKURA . “Are We Slaves of Convention?” was the debate held at Whenuakura :on Wednesday evening between the Whenuakura and Alton Young Farmers’ Clubs. Alton took the affirmative, the speakers being Messrs. Eric Oakley and R. Williamson, and Whenuakura the negative, Messrs. J. Parsons and J. Derrett being the speakers. Mr. E. F. Hemingway presided over the de : bate and Mr. C. V. Whittington acted . as judge. The speakers for both sides put forward sound arguments, and in criticising, Mr. Whittington said the speakers on each side appeared isolated from each other. It would be better to have teams of four who could collaborate before hand. The speakers had relied too much on having the subject in their minds, only occasionally glancing at notes. Mr. Williamson had opened very well and had a good carrying voice. Mr. Parsons had been inclinedato lean forward instead of speaking in a more upright, position. Mr. Oakley had opened in a breezy manner but had used slang phrases which were not conventional. Mr. Derrett. had a quiet humour of his own, which was very effective. Continuing, the judge said the leader had started well and had used some good arguments. The negative leader had also started well, but. had not. kept it up. The other two speakers were on a par. consequently his verdict was in favour of the affirmative speakers. Mr. J. Parsons welcomed 11m members of the Alton branch and congratulated them on the formation of their branch. He also thanked Mr. Whittington and Mr. Hemingway for attending. Mr. W. A. Taylor replied on be- [ half of Alton and expressed the wi<h | that Whenuakura members woul' : i visit Alton. PRESENTATIONS Mr. G. Corbett, on behalf of the West Coast Refrigerating Company, presented two newly-married members of the staff, Messrs. J. Petersen and M. Fairweather, with a beaten copper wood-box and Westminster chiming clock, respectively, this week BONING Mr. Keith Fitzwater has been nominated by the Patea Boxing Association for the welterweight contest at the New Zealand boxing champion , ships to be held in Wellington next week.
