DEFENCE NOTES

EXAMINATION WEEK GENERAL NEWS (By “Sentry”) During this week examinations are being held at the Drill Hall for officers sitting for promotion and N.C.O.'s for first appointments to commissions. Quite a number of officers and N.C.O.’s are sitting, several of the candidates being from Palmerston North and district. The examining board consists of Captain McCasgill, N.Z.P.S., and Captain J. W. Barry, N.Z.P.S. M.G. Course A course is to be held at Trentham, commencing at the end of next week, for officers and selected N.C.O.’s and privates of machine-gun companies of the Central Command. The course will extend over a period of seven days and those attending should find the training given of great assistance in the future training of other ranks. The dates of the course are September 5 to 12. Marton Ball Always one of the biggest events of the year in Marton, the annual military ball, which was held last week, was voted an outstanding success by all those who attended. The arrangements were first-class, dancers being well catered for by an excellent dance band, while the supper was fine. The committee is to be congratulated on the excellent show, while a special word of praise is due to the wonderful work of the lady helpers who Were no doubt responsible for the big job of catering. A large number of territorials from outside districts attended the function, from Wanganui alone some twenty odd making the trip. Wedding Bells Another well-known territorial, Corporal Ray Wlshnowsky, has become married.
