WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
UTIKU CELEBRATES THIRD BIRTHDAY. On the 19th. inst., the Utiku Hall was the scene of a very happy event, the occasion being the third birthday of the Utiku Women’s Institute. There were close on 200 women present including representatives from Taurangarere, Ohakune, Mataroa, Ohingaiti, Mangaweka, Hunterville and Wanganui. In the morning the ladies of the committee entertained the visitors at morning tea and later provided a very dainty luncheon. In the afternoon the meeting was opened by Mrs. Dellow, president, who welcomed all visitors and expressed her appreciation and gratitude at the large number present and hoped everyone would enjoy herself. Mrs, Dellow was particularly grateful to those ladies who had journeyed so far in order to be present on this special occasion and said she was very proud that there were present seven out of 10 members of the Ruapehu District Federation, viz.—Mesdames Millan (Wanganui), V. O. Pairman (Mangaweka), V. P. Gill (Mataroa) secretary, and Mesdames Dalziell (Hunterville), Carmine, Ohakune) and G. R. Transom and R. Dellow (Utiku). Mrs. Millan then spoke a few words and said, she was very happy to be amongst them again and congratulated the members on the growth of the movement and hoped •they would always bear in mind the aims and objects of the institute and do their best to live up to them. During the afternoon the following items were very much enjoyed by all: Song, Mrs. Carmine (Ohakune); vocal duet (Mesdames J. Allen and P. B. Luxford); tap dance. Miss Gwen Reid; songs, Mrs. J. Allen and Mrs. P. B. Luxford and two humorous sketches played by Mrs. Kendall and Miss W. Dellow and Mrs. G. R. Transem and Miss P. Prime respectively. The “Duck Competition” was won by Miss Muriel Belk. After a dainty tea had been served the beautiful iced cake made by Mrs. Belk was cut by the seven members of the executive committee who were present, and everyone received a generous piece. When this little ceremony was over games of quoits, dart throwing and a nail driving competition were indulged in until the hall resembled a miniature show. Quite a feature of the day was the collection of antiques and most articles were over 100 years old. The competition for the month was prettiest article from two skeins of wool and resulted as follows:
