MATCH AT MASTERTON. WELLINGTON BEAT BUSHWAIRARAPA. [Ter Press Association! MASTERTON. Aug. 25. The Wellington Rugby representatives defeated the combined Waira-rapa-Bush fifteen by 31 to 26 at Memorial Park. The visitors won because their backs were well supplied with the hall and had the resilence which only uncommon skill and speed and instinct, can produce A crowd of about. 3000 watched the match, which ' was played at a terrific pace and packed with colourful incident and purple patches. Excitement was intense in the second spell when the crowd was thrilled at Wairarapa’s grand recovery. All the players were on their foes with a view to selection in the first Test team, the New Zealand selection committee being present. Wairarapa were three up in Ihe 1 first five minutes, Lang kicking a fine i penalty. The speed and resource of i the Wellington backs was cutting gaps in the Wairarapa defence and Fleming cut through beautifully to give Edwards a clear run-in. Lamason converted. Then Pollock came up and : took a hand. All the backs handled | safely for Wright to cap a bright movement with a try which Lamason converted. Admirable co-ordination between the Wellington backs and forwards was revealed in the next scoring movement. Pollock went clear through the Wairarapa backs and set a bunch of Wellington forwards racing goal-wards. Hull applied the finishing touches. Lamason missed th? kick. Seven Wellington players became associated in a great rush that culminated in Fraser Smith scoring. Lamason missed. All that had happend in 25 minutes. Eventually Devine and East wood broke clear and paved the way for a try scored by Spring. Lang con- j verted. Near the interval the Wei- ' I lington backs again swung into action : and Edwards raced across but lost possession when tackled by Peterson, j Wright, however, was on hand to score the try. which Lamason converted. Wairarapa and Busn were 2l to 8 when they came out after the interval. After Peterson bad saved a couple of tries by deadly tackling tackling Tindill grubber - kicked through and followed up Io score. Lamason converted. Wairarapa slowly bul surely began to get the upper hand and I heir forwards worried Wellington incessantly. The defence held until Spring forced his way across and Lang converted. Then came the try of the day. R. Devine received near midfield and he went straight ahead for a great try which Lang converted from the sideline. Wairarapa continued to press but the Wellington forwards broke clear and Fraser Smith gave Lamason a clear run in. Lamason converted, making the score Wellington 31 to 16. Wellington faded out of the picture from then on. Peterson worked his way across ior a try. Lang’s kick hitting the cross-bar and rebounding. Wairarapa's valiant, efforts had the crowd on its feet and the cheering was unrestrained when Lang cut through and handed to Fallaver, to Eastwood, I who scored. Lang converted.
