CITY COUNCIL

LAST NIGHT’S MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH The Wanganui City Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers) presiding. There were also present Councillors J. Siddells, T. L. Sperring, G. H. Trott, F. C. Atkinson, J. J. Scott, J. Robertson, A. E. Halligan, and J. D. Crowley. Residents of Watkins Street are to be informed that the footpath and roadway will receive attention later in the year when conditions are more suitable for the class of work to be done. A sub-committee consisting of the chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. Crowley), together with the Mayor and Cr. Halligan, has been set up to go into the matter of purchasing a new weigh-bridge and report to a future meeting. Permission was granted the Primary Schools to hold a soccer tournament on Cook's Gardens on September 1,2 and 3. Such permission will be subject to weather conditions being favourable and the cost of marking the ground and erecting goal posts is to be borne by the schools. Tram shelters are to be erected on Brassey Road (cost £25) and at the Castlecliff terminus (£l5). A request that the tram service be extended from Kaikokopu Road to near the Aramoho Railway Bridge was considered, but in view of the fact that the present fifteen minutes’ service does not afford sufficient time for this extra run the alteration was refused. Crs. Scott and Robertson made a spirited protest at this decision and endeavoured to have the matter referred back to the committee with a recommendation that it be amended to permit the tram to travel the extra distance. Cr. Halligan, chairman of the Tramway Committee, said that the extra running would seriously jeopardise the service. The whole thing had been gone into carefully and found to be not practicable. After hearing what the engineer had said, Cr. Siddells was of opinion that the extra running could not be undertaken except with a 20-minute service. , Cr. Halligan said that a 20-minute service was out of the question. The Mayor, Crs. Robertson and Scott voted to amend the service to !a 20-minute one, the others present | opposing it
