Days when engineering was al a very primitive stage are recalled by the exhibit in the Dominion Museum, Wellington, of four wooden water pipes which were once part of London’s water supply mains. The pipes are elm logs bored out, and the simple joints arc reinformed with iron bands. An adequate water supply for London was discussed as early as the reign of Edward 1., but nothing extensive was undertaken until 1609, when the Common Council granted High Middleton the power to construct the system of which the nines in the museum formed a part.

The marvels of the thyroid gland were described by Dr. John Guthrie in an address to the Christchurch branch ot the Royal Sanitary Institute last week. In early life, he said, the thyroid controlled growth, and in later life played an important part in many bodily functions. Children deprived of iodine on which tne thyroid's operation depended developed into cretins, or dwarfs, and remained dwarfs mentally and physically to their deaths, said Dr. Guthrie. In later life, .disturbance of the thyroid caused enormous obesity, the sufferer greatly increasing in weight, and becoming dull mentally and physically. But correcting the iodine deficiency, the sufferers became normal again. Mental of physical shocks were put right by the thyroid gland, rind it was the thyroid that caused the fever which helped patients to overcome such an illness as pneumonia. Without the proper operation of the thyroid, the sufferer would be completely without emotion.
