FLOODS SUBSIDE
NORTHLAND AGAIN NORMAL [Per Press Association] WHANGAREI, Aug. 24. The cessation of the rain late on Saturday afternoon allowed the flood waters to get away throughout the Northland. Comparatively little damage has been done, and road and rail traffic are normal. To-day there is bright sunshine. joined the Bolshevik Party and was a member of the Reval Council of Workers' Deputies during the revolution of 1905. Between 1906 and 1917 he suffered various terms of imprisonment and deportation, and was finally sentenced to five years’ hard labour in a Moscow' prison, followed by deportation for life to Siberia. Released by the Revolution of 1917, he took part in the Bolshevik coups in July and October, and afterwards devoted himself particularly to trade union work, editing the Metal Workers’ Review and being elected to the Moscow Trades Union Council. In 1918 he became president of the AllRussian Central Trades Union Council. For a short time he represented the Soviets in Turkestan, and with the organisation of the U.S.S.R. he became a member of the Central Executive Committee of the new State. He was vice-president of the Soviet delegation to London in 1924 and a member of the delegation to Paris in 1926.
