MILK RETURN SHEETS
FACTORY MANAGER’S LAPSE PROSECUTION IN TARANAKI [Per Press Association] NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 24. Charged with knowingly assigning to a milk supply a grade other than the true grade, Patrick Phillip Jenkins, manager of the Newall Dairy Company, was fined £4 with costs £S 13s in the New Plymouth Court today. The charge was laid by William Crawford, of the Department of Agriculture. It was explained that it was the duty of the manager to enter the grade of milk on sheets showing the weight of the milk supplied by each supplier. This Jenkins had omitted to do for three months. When enquiries were made Jenkins made returns to the department but these did not coincide with the returns made to the company secretary. Jenkins gave as the reason for his failure to make the returns the fear that if he made correct returns there would be trouble amongst the suppliers. It was stated that this was the first prosecution of the kind in the district. The magistrate said there did not appear to be any criminal intention, but it was the manager’s duty to be strong enough to act without fear of suppliers’ reaction.
