WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WESTMERE MEETING. At the August meeting of the Westmere Institute Miss Smith presided over a good attendance. One new member was welcomed. The hall was fragrant with bowls of violets and spring flowers, which were afterwards sent to sick members. It was decided to take up a collection towards the portrait of Queen Mary for the National Art Gallery. Invitations were received from Mosston and Okoia Institutes to attend their September meetings. Miss Smith, who was delegate to the recent conference in Dunedin, then gave her report. This was most interesting, and the speaker gave a very clear conception of all that took place, and made one realise the great opportunity that awaits the women of the world to-day. To quote her concluding words: “Too often we become obsessed with the “little things” of ; institute life—demonstratins, circles, : etc. These are very necessary, but we 1 must realise that after all they are 1 only little things. At conference one < feels something of the “big things” of ' institute life—we realise how we are 1 influencing the life of the community, 1 how the movement has taken its place in our national life, and how we are 1 making contacts with women in other ( countries in an effort to pave the ' way for better international under- ; standing. We realise too, the power t of that great body of women, all 1 working together for similar aims and I ideals. “It is the little things of life 1 that create differences in the big I things of life we are one.” Mrs. Feist proposed a hearty vote : of thanks to Miss Smith for her able < report.. Two elocutionary items by Miss < Phyllis Taylor, of Wangaui, were ; much enjoyed and Mesdames Lambert' « and Wilson also entertained with sev- i eral musical games. An amusing competition was won ' by Mrs. Greenwood and Miss A. Smith. : An arts and crafts circle has been ■ formed with Miss Dawes as convener, and will meet on Tuesday IS. The institute is co-operating with the C.G.C. to-day (Saturday), when . a demonstration on dish gardens , will be given in the Westmere Hill. All who are interested are welcome to attend. The points competition—best piece . of smocking—was won by Miss Nancy ■ Smith 1, Miss Dawes 2, Miss Nancy ' Smith 3. Mrs. Lynch kindly judged ; this.
