MAJESTIC THEATRE

“RIFF-RAFF.” The riotous, quarrelling, hardhanded waterfront of the of the big Pacific tunny fishing fleets is the setting for a stirring tale at the Majestic Theatre, “Riff-Raff.” As Dutch Muller Spencer Tracy is the first king of a pretty tough crowd, but he is obsessed by the idea that because he can lick anything on legs he is destined to be a leader of men. As Hatty, Jean Harlow has the role of a worker in the canning factory. “Naughty Marietta.” The music of Victor Herbert, the singing of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, and superb historical settings combine to form a most attractive and enjoyable entertainment in Goldwyn - Mayer’s spectacular translation to the screen of Victor Herbert’s masterpiece “Naughty Marietta,’’ commencing a special return season to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre. The picture shows court scenes in France and the voyage of Casquette girls from that country to the new settlement of Louisiana to marry the daring young settlers in a foreign land. The scenes include a fight with pirates, and the triumph of the young adventurers from Europe. The meeting of the young couple is most romantic, and in this part of the story there are sung such popular songs and music as “Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life,” “I’m Falling in Love with Someone,” “Chansonette,” and “The Italian Street Song.” The supporting programme is also excellent.
