LAWRENCE TROPHY REPRESENTATIVE MATCH TARANAKI AND WANGANUI Taranaki is sending down a strong soccer team to play Wanganui on Cook's Gardens to-morrow in the first match for the Lawrence trophy. This trophy was presented three seasons ago for competition between th< representative teams of Taranaki, Manawatu, and Wanganui in what is known as the triangular tournament. Unfortunately Manawatu is not participating this season so that the competition is between Wanganui and Taranaki only. Wanganui is the present holder, but will have to step lively to-morrow if Taranaki can produce the form they displayed against the Australians when they scored three goals. Local fans will be particularly interested in the performance of Taranaki’s centreforward. F. Beckett, who plaved in Wanganui for several seasons for the Athletic Club. Parkinson’s reappearance at centre-half is also likely to be watched with interest a- he is an outstanding player of great determination and has caused Wanganui’s downfall on two or three occasions previously. He is said to be a bit on the slow'side now and may find the lor”T line too speedy. To-morrow's match will not provide the artistic exhibition of the code displayed by the Australians a fortnight ago, but will be a much more thrilling encounter in that both teams are evenly matched. Taranaki will he represented bv the following players: J. Rae. J. Crawford. Cockeril’. Barker, Parkinson. D. Scott. J. Hill. P. Gardner. F. Beckett. Eccleshaw. Collingwood. Reserves: L. Henderson. T. Murdoch. Wanganui’s team will be: Mclnnes, Wade. Puddle. Ward. Dashfield, Whiting, Mackie. Tasker, Heath, A. Kidd, Quinn. Reserves: O. Wilson, Tavlor. The Taranaki team will arrive in Wanganui at mid-day and intend to stay overnight. Anyone willing to billet a player is requested to advise the secretary (J. Thomson) or ring ’phone 2356. As a curtain-raiser the junior rep. team will play a team picked from The Rest. The following are the teams: — Reps: Hubbard, Thomson. Henderson, Crowe, Dear, Whiteside. Wrigley, Myers, Kidd, McKenna, and Nelson. The Rest: Hoskins, Croucher, Good, Blackmore. Farrell. Dickie. Rush, Joyce, Davidson. Davis, and Fowler. AUSTRALIANS’ RETURN TOUR IN NEW ZEALAND SUPERIOR COMBINATION SYDNEY, Aug. 6. Mr. Storey, manager of the Australian soccer team which has returned from New Zealand, said the high scoring ot the Australians was partly the result of combination and all-round superiority, but New Zealand had not fielded its best team for any of the tests. G. Smith, who was responsible for 36 of the Australians’ goals on the tour, said that New Zealand had completely changed its team after each test defeat, and this brought about a lack of combination which made them vulnerable when faced by skilful, concerted attack.
