ARBOR DAY
PLANTING OF TREES I TOURIST LEAGUE'S WORK 1 Arbor Day was celebrated throughput the Dominion yesterday by the [planting of trees by school pupils and I members of local and public bodies. (In a number of cases, however, the day is to be observed on a different [date to that set apart by the Government. ; In many schools throughout the Wanganui Education Board's district, pupils were given an opportunity of planting young trees in their school grounds. In many cases, too, addresses in which the value from an economic point of view of the reafforestation of the Dominion were delivered to the pupils by members of the teaching staff or members of the school committee. The value of the conservation of the remaining forest areas in the Dominion, too, was stressed and an endeavour was made to inculcate into the minds of the young people a love and respect for trees. This year as a result of an appeal by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, the co-opera-tion of local bodies throughout the Dominion was received in order to make Arbor Day. 1936, a greater success than in other years. Of recent years the real meaning and significance of Arbor Day has tended to be overlooked and it was in an endeavour to correct this state that the Government made an endeavour to secure the co-operation of young and old alike. The appeal of the Hon. W. E. Parry did not fall on deaf ears as far as the ! Wanganui Tourist and Development • League was concerned. One plank in ■ the policy of the league being the 1 beautifying and popularising of ■ Castlecliff Beach, members visited the I seaside resort yesterday morning when trees were planted around the parking area on the seaward side of the old tea kiosk site. There were about 20 members of the league present and 30 pohutukawas were planted under the direction of Dr. G. J. Adams. During the afternoon, a number of flowering cherry and gum trees were planted on a bank at Taylorville.
