WANGANUI SUPERIOR INTER-SCHOOL MATCH PALMERSTON NORTH DEFEATED WIN FOR TECHNICAL COLLEGE After a bright exhibition of interschool Rugby a team representing the Wanganui Technical College defeated the Palmerston North Boys’ High School first fifteen by 17 to 11. Tne match was played on the Wanganui Technical College grounds yesterday afternoon and was noted for fast, open movements. Wanganui’s points came from three tries, two of which were converted, and a potted goal. Palmerston North’s points were made up of two tries, one of which was converted, and a penally goal. Wanganui, on the uay’s showing, had the superior team, but for the most part play was of. an even nature, particularly in the first spell. At half-time the points were even, three all. Wanganui kept play in the visitors’ territory during the opening stages of the game and won several scrums in succession. After the change - over, Palmerston North launched several attacks into Wanganui territory and for a time the situation was dangerous for the home side. Palmerston North, at this stage, were gaining the advantage m scrummage and their forward pack was quick to seize opportunities. As the game advanced, however. Wanganui began to gain the upper hand and were pressing the issue when the whistle went for time. The visitors were unfortunate in losing the services of the captain, E. Edwards, at half-time. Edwards had been playing a good game as full-back and was compelled to leave the field through an Injury. He was replaced by Sinclair. Jones, and C. E. Mita. Palmerston North won the toss and play opened with a rush by the visitors, but a scrum occurred about halfway. Wanganui secured from the scrum and D. Watson passed to Bailey and made a bid for the line but was tackled by Edwards. Shortly after this move a penalty was awarded Wanganui, but Hermans’ kick fell short of the post. With O’Shea, Bliss, Manning, and Taylor prominent, Wanganui attacked, but the Palmerston North full-back relieved the situation. Wanganui was awarded another penalty, but again Hermans' kick failed. A further passing rush was instituted by the home forwards, but the movement was smothered and the ball went out. Watson secured and made a rush for the line, but was tackled by Davidson. Wanganui was now pressing the game into Palmerston North territory and any forward rush by the opposing pack was quickly smothered. Another splendid run was made by McPhail, but when almost over the line he was tackled. Palmerston North endeavoured to set their backs in motion and crossed the half-way mark, Howall making a fine run and passing to his left wing. A knock-on occurred and spoilt a origin movement. For a time both sides indulged in some hard rucking play with honours fairly even. The visitors were looking lor an opening and made several desperate efforts to break away, but were penned in by the speedy Wanganui pack, play remaining in midfield. Hermans made a good run and put Wanganui in a favourable position, but was smothered. From a scrum half-way the home side secured but obstructed. At this stage both sides were using their backs to advantage and some good tackling was witnessed. Wanganui's first try came from a splendid forward rush. Watson secured from a scrum and sent the ball along a chain of forwards tor Grogan to score. Hermans’ kick failed. Wanganui 3, Pcilmerston North 0 Palmerston North rallied and some hard and fast play was witnessed in Wanganui territory. After the change-over, Palmerston North rallied for some fine efforts and secured from several scrums in his fall by a body press in the second round. Welterweight.--J. Anthony (10.12) defeated J. Te Whit’ (10.5). This was a lovely bout, opening at great pace to enliven the crowd to expressions of approval. Anthony pressed his opponent heavily in the first round and nearly got a fall by a'body press, but the Maori was too elusive. The Maori attacked in the second round but lost an effective headlock. He kicked out of two attempts to pin him. In the final round Anthony gained a fall with a body press. He was a long time satisfying the referee. Lightweight.—M. Tonga (9.9 and V. Gibson (9.9) drew. Gibson did the attacking in the first round and after bringing his opponent to the mat with a headlock he gained a fall with a body press. Tonga livened in the second round and had his opponent in a body scissors at one stage. It was an even round. Tonga again made the pace in the third round and levelling his opponent with a headlock tried for a fall with a body press. He got it eventually, much to the delight of the crowd.

Light-heavyweight—Bren Sheppard (11.8) lost to B. Hakaraia (12.0). Relying on wrist holds, Sheppard was aggressive at the start, but the Maori turned the tables and was on top at the gong. Hakaraia maintained the pace in the second round and pinned his opponent with a body press in the second round to gain a well deserved fall. Sheppard used an effective head lock in the thir round and then came back to his wristlock. The Maori defeated both holds, but suffered from a toe hold for some time. He withstood it long enough to win.

The visitors made a determined effort to score and pressed play into the Wanganui half. During a hot attack the home side obstructed and a penalty was awarded Palmerston North. Beard’s kick was successful. Palmerston North 11, Wanganui 8. This proved an incentive for the Wanganui side and from then onward play was mostly in the visitors’ territory. Wanganui’s potted goal came from a brilliant effort by Watson. Wanganui 12, Palmerston North 11. Shortly after this move Wanganui again attacked and Grogan secured, passing to Shewan who scored. Hermans’ kick was applauded by the crowd and the game ended Wanganui 17, Palmerston North 11. The referee was Mr R. Mcßae.

INTER-SCHOOLS’ MATCH PLAY AT NEW PLYMOUTH BOYS’ HIGH BEAT COLLEGIATE [ Special to “Chronicle." J NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 5. In’drizzling rain at New Plymouth to-day, the annual match between Wanganui Collegiate School and New Plymouth Boys’ High School resulted in a win for the home team by 17 points to 13 after Wanganui had led at half-time by 8 points to 6. In spite of the greasy ball the handling of both teams was splendid and many sparkling movements were seen. With the wind in their favour the Wanganui forwards dominated the situation for the greater part of the first spell to establish a definite lead, but the New Plymouth backs came more into the picture and eventually rattled on the points to lead till ten minutes before time by 17 points to 8. Wanganui scored and converted a try in the concluding stages. The first score came when Meuli obtained possession from a iow pass by Novak. The Wanganui player burst through after kicking and, with two men in support, drew the full-back and handed on to Skerratt, who scored. Green converted. The Wanganui backs attacked and New Plymouth were penalised three yards inside the half-way line. Green landed a great goal and Wanganui led by 8 points to nil. The New Plymouth backs then moved into action and twice in quick succession Farnell scored tries which were not converted. On the resumption, Wanganui had several narrow escapes, but eventually a forward rush by New Plymouth resulted in a try being scored in the corner, the home team taking the lead. Wanganui looked like regaining the lead but New Plymouth rallied and Mclntyre went over for a nice try. It was still anybody's game until the New Plymouth backs swung into action and Donnell;' cut out two opponents to hand on to Mclntyre, who scored a try which Broughton converted. The final score came to Wanganui shortly before the final whistle. Palmer picking up in midfield to shake off a high tackle and pass to Martin, who touched down under the bar for Green to add the points. Thus the final score was- New Plymouth Boys’ High School 17; Wanganui Collegiate School 13. . The hitherto unbeaten Rugby record of the Timaru Boys' High School this season was broken by Waitaki winning the annual fixtures, the seniors by 16 to 6 and the juniors by 16 to 5. With a strong wind advantage Timaru led 6 to 3 at the end of the first spell, but after changing over Waitaki added 13 points. Walton was the outstanding back on the field, scoring two brilliant tries for Waitaki.
