FIRE BRIGADE ANNUAL MEETING s Superintendent F. Fitzwater presided at the annual meeting of the ■_ Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade on i, Wednesday. There was an excellent r * at tendance, including Waverley visiI tors. Apologies were received from I Councillors D. Roots, R. Haddow, exs I Captain M. Carey. ex-Fireman C. 'j I Adams, Fireman J. Erewatea, of tn»e , Waitara Brigade. c In making the presentation of bars j and trophies, His Worship the Mayor ; • said he felt* like one of the boys hav- • ing attended for a considerable time. ! He complimented the brigade, especii ally on its motto. “Ever Ready.” There I were six gold star members out ol ’ nine present and it showed no lack of ' interest by these men. some who were I not active members. He was pleased g I to see ex-Captain Spooner, who had a | lour gold bars to his credit, and had 4 | the interest of the brigade at heart. I_ i The balance-sheet, showed a steady e j progress owing to the careful manageiS i ment of the executive and the officers a ' were to be congratulated. He complicl I mentecl the brigade on its efficiency £ | and reguarlity at practices. It was e 1 a labour of self sacrifice and they ree eeived nothing except bars for serd i vice. The Borough Council, he con--1 tinued, was always ill sympathy with f i the brigade as far as conditions would 1 allow. Patea was ranked in insur- •_ ance companies as a sound town for f its size, which meant a benefit for - every individual householder. r> Mr. A. Coyte, in a pleasing speech, v said it was a pleasure to be present and to see the brigade so keen and enthusiastic on their work. When in ■j action their movements were quick and at the recent competition held at the Freezing Company's works, he had been surprised at the times put up. In different works he had been connected with fire brigades, and it > saved a lot of worry having a brigade , like the Patea one. He hoped to see • a full muster at the next works’ test. ( and presented the brigade with a , handsome cup for competition, on behalf of the Patea Freezing Company. He thanked the Mayor ■ for coming along and presenting the trophies and installing officers, it was only members who new what the . Mayor had done; he had been a great , friend to the brigade ever since he came to Patea, was an active member [ for five years and ever since his heart L had always been with them. G. Willis, W. Millan, C. Carey and . W. Willis all returned thanks for their ' election. , The usual honorarium was granted ’ past secretary N. Coad. It was decided to take out an insurance policy on the Freezing Company’s Cup, against fire or Joss. New members elected were Ivan : Ansley, George Cosford and A. Clarkj son. The roll was called and last year’s ' attendance read, the latter showing 3 great keenness on the part of the ' members. • Supper was served and the rest of ; | the evening spent sociably. [ I SHERRY PARTY Mesdames R. Haddow, I. Jones, E. “ Baker and Misses Taylor and M. Gib- , bings were hostesses at a merry five ’ o’clock sherry party on Wednesday at ’ Miss Taylor’s residence, in honour of 1 Miss Joan Spurdie, who is to be mar- ■ ried shortly. Miss Joan wore a simple ; frock of wine rippled morocain with 1 full sleeves patterned in gold thread, 1 and a smart wine halo hat. Bowls of lovely pink shaded flowers • decorated the drawing room, and the , guests brought delightful gifts of ‘ linen and china for the bride of the ■ future. Mrs. T. E. Roberts made a charming speech and wished the guest of honour future happiness. ■ The guests were Mesdames J. S. | Pearce, F. Bostock, T. E. Roberts, and Misses G. Tompkins, B. Petersen, M ' Elmslie, R. Honeyfield, H. Simmons, O. Adams, V. Hunger, F. Hemingwav, - C. Gilligan. P. Simmons. B. Jackson/
