RISE TO SCREEN FAME
SYDNEY GIRL AS STAR A CONTRACT WITH HOLLYWOOD SYDNEY, July 16. A slim, ash-blonde Australian girl with grey-green eyes has suddenly found herself a screen star. Twenty - three-year-old Margaret Dare, whose real name is Peggy Barnes, has signed a long-term contract to play the leading role opposite Hollywood actor Victor Jory in “Rangle River,” an Australian story by Zane Grey. '"She is a real find.” declared the American, Clarence Badger, who is to direct the film. Mr. Badger, who chose Margaret out of hundreds of competitors, is the man who discovered Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow for the screen. Miss Dare has never done work for the films or on the professional .btage, but has done manikin work and has posed for fashion photographs. “Working with Clarence Badger and playing opposite Victor Jory means a tremendous lot. It is a wonderful beginning." she said. "It is a marvellous chance, and I will make the most of it. A typical Australian girl. Margaret is a splendid horsewoman. School days and residence in the country have given her a love of rural life, and skill at tennis, golf, and swimming. Clarence Badger is so delighted vith his discovery that he has already vritten to Columbia Studios in Hollywood. to tell the executives of the Australian screen star. It is possible that she will be sent to Hollywood on the completion of “Rangle River” to receive further screen training. lan Hunter has been added to the cast of “To Mary, With Love,” the Twentieth Century-Fox film starring Warner Baxter and Myrna Loy. Hunter has just finished playing in “Angel of Mercy.” Dolores Dei Rio. at present appearing with Douglas Fairbanks, junr.. in “Accused.” has signed a long-term contract with Columbia, for whom iie will make two pictures a year.
William Sei ter is to direct "Dimples.” Shirley Temples next picture. Jane Wyatt end Edward Everett Horton have been added to the cast of “Lost Horizan,” Ronald Colman's next picture. David Wark Griffith, famous silent director, has joined Warners as adviser to directors and producers. He will not direct any films personally. • * * * Parkyakarkus. Eddie Cantor’s "stooge.” has been given a contract by Radio and is to be teamed with Joe Penner in “The Assassins.” >
