RESTORING "CUTS”
THE OPPOSITION’S ATTITUDE APPROVAL OF THE MOVE SURPRISED AT RETROSPECTIVE DATE. SHOULD HAVE BEEN APRIL 1. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, July 23. There will be no obstruction by lhe Opposition to the Finance Bill, though its provisions may be criticised, Mr. G. W. Forbes, Leader of the Opposition, stated to-day. A caucus of the Opposition was held to-day. when the attitude to be taken up over the Bill was considered. The caucus meeting was attended by all members of the party in Wellington. "The Opposition will not obstruct the Bill because we ourselves undertook to restore wages when the conditions improved,” Mr. Forbes said, "and there is no doubt that they have improved and we would have restored the cuts.” Mr. Forbes expressed surprise that the cuts had not been mpde retrospective from April 1 and said the previous statements of the Government had given an impression that, that course would be adopted. The Public Service had expected salaries to be restored from April 1. /
