MALTA NAVAL BASE
RUMOURS REFUTED SIR S. HOARD’S STATEMENT L British Official Wireleaa. ] RUGBY, June 17. Invited in the House of Commons at question time to make a statement regarding the future of the Biitish Naval Base at Malta, Sir Samuel Ho are (First Lord of the Admiialty) said: “I am glad of the opportunity of contradicting rumou.s which have received some publicity that Malta is to be abandoned as a naval base. The Board of Admiralty have no intention of discontinuing the use of Malta as the principal naval base in the Mediterranean and tne headquarters of the Mediterranean fleet.” To a supplementary question as to the security of the base, Sir S. Hoaru replied: “I would never say that I am fully satisfied with any defence position, but 1 would state categorically that as we have no intention whatever of evacuating Malta we shall certainly take every practivable means to mane its defence adequate for possible at tack. ’ ’
