SOLAR ECLIPSE
TO-DAY’S OCCURRENCE VISIBLE IN MEDITERRANEAN PATH OF TOTALITY. A total eclipse of the sun, visible in the Mediterranean area, will take place to-day. The central phase will commence at 4.45 p.m. and the eclipse will end at 7.23 p.m., the maximum duration of totality being 152 seconds. The path of totality of the eclipse begins in the Mediterranean and passes across Greece, Turkey, the Black Sea, Southern Russia, Siberia and Northern Japan and finishes on the 180th meridian. The eclipse, of course, will not be visible in New Zealand but will be visible as a partial eclipse throughout the British Isles and generally throughout the whole of Europe and Asia. A British expedition has gone to the island of Chios in the Agean Sea. Its equipment includes a 12-foot coronagraph fed by an 8-inch Alton Clarke coelostat and a polar axis carrying four short focus cameras. The P. and O. liner Strathaird is on a cruise in the Afediterranean Sea and has on board 50 British astronomists.
