FORCED TO RETREAT
EVEREST EXPEDITION TANTALISING SETBACK [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] Received June 8, 8.25 p.m. LONDON, June 7. A copyright message from Mr. Hugh Ruttledge at Camp 3 on Saturday says: “Friday’s carefully organised attempt to re-oecupy Camp 4 failed. The consistency of the snow has changed at various places since Thursday and rapid! is becoming worse. It was so deep on the critical traverse that .Smythe tried a new line straight up to the crest which, however, proved impossible and the whole party retreated. Great slabs of snow arc being swept away by the wind. The 42 porters have been divided into four groups under .Shipton. They are not allowed to be roped together. It was a great relief to have everyone safely down. “We may be able to have one more try, as the west wind continues and the monsoon temporarily is weaker. It is tantalising to see the north face of Everest in better condition while the North Col keeps us off.”
