APPLICATION FOR AWARD COMPULSORY UNIONISM [ Per I’rcss An.-t cia i ..i. ] WELLINGTON, Max 25. An application for a. new timber workers’ award for the South Auckland, Taranaki, and Wellington districts was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day as the outcome of an agreement at the conciliation proceedings at Palmerston North on Mav 6. i Air Read, for the North J. lan 1 Tim- j ber Workers.’ Federation, brought under the Court’s notice the matter of compulsory unionism. He said that he had been in touch with the Minister, who told him that the amended Arbitration Act would be in operation almost immediately. Mr Read informed the Court that he understood that the compulsory unionism clause could come into force in about a riion:h after the passing of the Act. He \ ished that clause to be embodied in th.* new award Mr Sood, representing the employer-, said that those engaged iu the con filiation preveedings appeared to wish to leave the drafting of the preference clause entirely to the Court so that the clause would be in compliance with the new legislation. Judge Page said that the Court would take .time to consider that point when the legislation went through and would draw the clause in accor-lan. e with the 1 eg’ slation.
