WANGANUI AMATEURS TWELVE-MILE EVENT. SATL KDAY ’JS ROA D RACE. 1 the Wanganui Amateur Road Cycling Club held a 12-mile road race on Satuiuay, contestants starting from the Red Lion lun and travelling out to the six-mile peg and back. 1 Th-e piacings were as follow: —W ; . ( Smith I, W. Dvarslcy 2, R. Townsend t 3, J. Jeromscn 4. I Fastest Time. —R. Francis 31min. IDsec. J, F. Davidson 2, H. Hudson 3. c \V. Smith well deserved his win for I. he worked hard right from the start, e With his co-markers Smith had caught r all the front markers before the turn, f actually gaining time to this point over c the back men. Then, after the turn, the tail wind made the pace a crackei. r The front bunch of twelve, at lhe turn, e had dwindled down to eight at the v finish, four riders b’Cing dropped on s the Afarybank hill, leaving only the j fittest to fight out the sprint. I W. Doarslcy is once again in the s limelight, this being the second occasion he has been runner-up. He is riding very consistently aud must be very t lit to sprint into a position like that t among older riders. It is no mean per- 1 formancc for a first-year rider. 1 R. Townsend started his riding to- t wards the latter end of last season and a with a little more experience should be a able to improve his sprint to put him a into the lead. He has staying ability h for the longer races. f R. Francis gained fastest time over u Davidson in tne sprint. Both of these a riders are riding exceptionally well, and were it not for a hold-up when they were due, to start they would have returned, a little faster time. H. Hodson rode a hard race with his co-markers, Couchman, Sullivan, Feilcis. Although the last two were dropped towards the end, they must hav-c teamed well to stay away from the fastest time men who started 1 minute behind them. With the season now well started ail are looking forward Io seeing some oithe old riuers come back. It <s rum- ( ourod that Les. Anderson is out train- j. ing “on lhe quiet” so as to spring a ( surprise when he starts again. Jack ;j Wade seems engrossed in soccur. j Bert Hansen has turned cycling in f lor the Rugby game. John McCormick does not seem to have even thought, of r training yet. Jim Casey has the right , r intentions but the, sight, of his motor- r bike puts him oil hard work. Tom Pid- f well will probably be out before long. , With all these fellows out again it r will make the club stronger than it j has been for a few years. f There was a record attendance al the club run over the week-end, over 16 ;1 riders turning out for a pleasure ride j after Saturday’s gruelling race. f Riders ara reminded of the two races f tn be held on the King’s Birthday, $ Jum- 23. One is at Palmerston North. , the Glaxo Cup race, coveting a <l's- . tanc.e of 4(1 miles, the course being Palmerston North to Bulls and back to Palmerston North.
