THE SHOOTING SEASON. Strong westerly winds, rain showers and rough weather along tin? coast yesterday, combined to inaxc things promising for game shooters to-day, when the shooting season officially opens. Reports from various quarters are to title effect that ducks are again fairly numerous, while pheasants and quail have been seen in increasing numocis. The only drawback is the fact that several favourite places have been shot over by poachers during the past week, tnough careful guard has been kept. It. is hard to cover a wide range of territory, heweve . and unauthorised persons have slipped in and secured game, and got away again before rang ers and property-owners have been ab.e to apprehend them. Yesterday a large number of parties went out to lakes and lagoons, as weli as to the beach, and the guns will be barking loudly this morning if th<’ wind keeps up. GENERAL NEWS On Wednesday afternoon Bulls .‘mH Sanson Basketball Clubs hell a pi 1 tice game, Bulls winning by 5 goal.- to 2. Scorers for Bulls were Misses Joan Button 3. P. Sharp 1, and Minnie Kearney 1; and for Sanson Mrs. Mav secured two goals. Although the Bulls Club is drawn in the senior Rugby fixtures, it is unlik'-’.v that a senior fifteen will be fielded here. Two additional seniors are lea® ing the district. T>. Henderson going to Wanganui. and Ray Bromley to Rongotea, and only two or three r.f last year's seniors remain.
