The Wanganui Rugby Union was formed in 1887 but organised matches had been in progress in the city for many years previously. Rugby had it? birth in the city in the days when garrisons of soldiers were stationed here for the protection of the township, and Wanganui claims to be one of the oldest Rugby centres in New Zealand. There are a number of Rugby unions in the Dominion that have already celebrated their jubilee but in many cases organised Rugby was in progress in this centre many years before.
