Rising rivers added, a threat of widespread floods to the distress in the six southern States stricken by the tornadoes, which now are believed to have claimed at least 500 lives. Already 450 bodies have been recovered, 1727 persons are badly injured and many hundreds less seriously hurt. The damage is estimated at 25,000,000 dollars. Four inches of rainfall, which overnight coursed through (he Carolina foothills, washed away bridges, flooded highways and drove hundreds of persons from their homes. The American Bed Cross has announced that the tornado has produced the third worst disaster on record in the United States. It will take ten years for the affected communities, which are not rich industrially, to recover from the economic losses.
