HOSPITAL ADDITIONS

APPROVAL RECEIVED “MATTER OF URGENCY’’ SPECIAL MEETING TO DISCUSS PROPOSALS General approval of the plans for extensive additions to the hospital was received from the Director-General of Health, Dr. R. A. Shore, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board. “The details, however, will need further consideration before the final plans are prepared,” stated the letter. “When, therefore, the general scheme has been discussed by your board and a decision reached, arrangements tan be made to discuss details with your board’s officers.” The chairman, Mr W. G. Broderick, said that the estimated cost of the additions was £23,000. This included all contingencies and even the fuinishing of the additions. Mr R. Farley suggested that the matter should bo discussed at the special mooting to bo held next month. The chairman said that the business for the special meeting would take a whole day. Mr A. 8. Coleman: Is the whole of this work of an urgent nature? The chairman said that the whole matter had been discussed with representatives of the Health Department. It seemed a lot of money to spend, but by doing the building this way the board would do something that was lasting. Any patching would mean a recurrence of the expense in the future. The board had to have two new wards, a new operating theatre, new quarters for the bacteriologist, and a now dispensary. All these things were necessary. Looking ahead this was the most, economical way of doing the work. The board’s architect, Mr James, said that whatever work was done would last for many years. The whole matter had boon thrashed out from every point of view. Mr Coleman suggested that the proposals could be discussed on the night of the special meeting. It was eventually decided to discuss the proposals at a special meeting on April 15.
