SANDON

SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Sanson School Committee was held at the residence of Mr D. Sanson, Mr E. J. Bowater piesiding, and the following also being present: Messrs D. C. San(son and E. Wilcock, and the head I teacher, Miss J. M. Pcattie. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. J. Davey and J. W. Meyer. The head teacher (Miss J. M. Peattie) reported that Mr Lang, the agricultuie instructor, had visited the school and had commented very favourably on the garden plots and also on the attention that the committee had given the grounds during the holidays. Inspectors Crosby and Merrington had also visited the school. It was decided that the •committee adopt a sports costume of blue and white and that a bulk purchase be made of material which would be available for sale to the parents at cost price. A banner has been donated to the school and will be made by Miss J. M. Pcattie and Mrs Bowater A working bee was arranged to assist the children with the tennis court. Mr H. Bowater, of Feilding, donated a book to the school library and it was decided to forward him a letter of appieciation. A Rugby and a basketball team are to bo entered in the schools competitions again this year. It was resolved that a letter be written Mr W. G. Bla’ck, chairman of the School Committees’ Association wishing him a speedy and complete recovery from his unfortunate accident. It was reported that two senior boys, Lindsay T’ostevin and Nelson Butler had made a tennis ladder. The committee thanked them for their work. i LABOUR PARTY PRESENTATION MADE TO POPULAR SECRETARY The annual meeting of the Sandon branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held in the Town Hall, Sanson, last Thursday evening, when there was a very good attendance of members. Mr A. G. Nesbit occupied the chair. The seexetary presented the annual report and balance-sheet which were adopted on the motion of Messrs D. C. Sanson and L. Tattle. D. Sanson, speaking to the motion, said the re-port indicated a most satisfactory state of affairs and. he congratulated the officers of the branch on their work during the year. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr I). J. Koster; vice-presi-dent, Mr A. G. Nesbit; secretary, Air K. Cockburn; assistant-secretary, Mr E. J. Bowater; hon. auditor, !Mr C. P. Good; conference delegate, Mr E. J. Bowater; executive •committee, Miss I. Sanson, Messrs P. loung, D. Sanson, and L. Tattle. An apology was received from Mr C. L. Hunter, M.P., and he wished the branch continued success. After the business of the evening the ladies provided a very dainty supper, which was much appreciated by all. At a suitable juncture the president, Mr D. J. Koster, took the opportunity of presenting the retiring secretary, Mr E. J. Bowater, with an 8-day chiming clock. Mr Koster said that Mr Bowater had been secretary of the branch since its inception twelve years ago and that during that period he had served the Labour movement faithfully and well and the branch hoped that he would take service iu higher office in the movement. Mrs L. Tattle then presented Mrs Bowater with a beautiful bouquet and in so doing said that members realised and valued the good work done by her and thanked her for entertaining the guests of the branch on all occasions. Replying, Mr Bowater said he was completely taken by surprise. He said it had always been his aim to serve the movement to the Lest of his ability because he believed in it. ’lhe humane side of the party policy was what appealed most. Now that the party was in office he hoped that all would do their best to assist in making the policy operative. Concluding, Air Bowater said that both he and Mrs Bowater very much appreciated the kindly thought that had prompted members to make them such a beautiful presentation. Musical honours were then accorded. DRAMA CIRCLE Members of the Sandon Drama Circle are progressing splendidly in their rehearsal of the play they intend to stage at the forthcoming Women’s Institute drama competition, which is to be held at Sandon on March 28. TE KAWAU SUB-UNION A special meeting of the Te Kawau Sub-union is being held at Rongotea on Tuesday, March 24, when the question of the sub-union’s future is to be discussed.
