Mrs. F. Birch is a Wanganui visitor to Auckland. Airs. Irwin Howell, Wanganui, is visiting Auckland. Mrs. E. Cole. Wanganui, was a recent visitor io Wellington. Mr. and Airs. S. L. Quinn, of Dunedin, are on a visit to Wanganui. Air. and Airs. F. Fitzgerald, are visitors to this city from Hawke’s Bay. Airs. E. Al. Cranstone and Miss J. Chanstone, of Fordell, motored to Wellington early in the week. Mrs. H. Al. Campbell, Horonui, motored to Wanganui from Hastings on Monday. Airs. Colin Gardner, who has been visiting her mother, Airs. A. Doig, St. John’s Hill, has returned to Hawera. Airs. J. Mewburn, of Rotorua, relumed home yesterday after visiting friends in Wanganui. Mrs. J. F. Cracroft Wilson, of Canterbury, will leave Wellington by the Akaroa on March 28 to visit England. Alis. Edward Riddiford, of Lower Hutt, who is visiting her daughter, Airs. Dudley Kettle, at Napier, will leave in May to visit England. Airs. D. Carthy, of Auckland and until a year ago a resident of AS anganui, is revisiting tlhe city, and later will go on to Wellington. Aliss G. Mackintosh left yesterday on a holiday visit to Dunedin and Invercargill. Miss Ester Anderson, daughter of Dr. and Airs. J. W. Anderson, Wicksteed Street, will leave at the end of this month on a three years’ visit to England and the Continent. She will be a passenger on the Alongonui for Sydney, staying tlhcre a short time before sailing for England. Airs. Alfred Watt, Canadian founder of Women’s Institutes in England, and chairman, of the Associated Countrywomen of the World, the triennial conference of which is being held in Washington in June, wilt visit New Zealand this year. She has been invited to corny by the Dominion Federation of Women s inititutes. Alter at-

tending the conference at Washington Airs. Watt expects to pay some visits in Canada and will proceed to New Zealand in September. Her degrees are Bachelor of Arts, and Alaster of Arts (University of Toronto), and her orders, Member of the British Empire and Gold Aledal of the Societe des Agriculteurs (official), France. Aliss Jean Batten has gone to France as the guest of the Aeronautic Club de France, wrote a London correspondent on February 22. New Zealand friends will be interested to know tihat she has been allotted for the second year in succession the Challenge Trophy of the Women’s International Association of Aeronautics of the United States of America for the most noted Hight of the year. Aliss Batten now holds the Gohl and Silver Cup. in appreciation of her aviation record, the Royal Empire Society have made her an hunoiary life member. ENGAGEMENTS The engagement is announced between Jona K. Hardy, son of the late bir William Hardy and of Lady Hardy, of Cambridge, and Airs. Marjorie Mac-d-onald, daughter of the late Mr. John Grigg and of Mrs. Grigg, Longbcacn, New Zealand, wrote a London correspondent on February 22. An engagement that has caused considerable interest in -sporting circles ia Australia, is that of Miss Clair Dennis, the Olympic swimmer, to Mr. George Golding, the champion runner. Miss Dennis, who is 20 years of age, is the iolder of the Olympic and Empire Games women’s 200 metres breast stroke swimming titles. Both she and her iiance were members of the 1932 Olympic Games team at Los Angelis, where Miss Dennis, then only 10, won the breaststroke title. Golding competed in the 400 metres Rat race, and was a finalist in t-'he 400 metres hurdles event. He shares the Australian 410 yards (hurdles record with Alf Watson, the Victorian. Mr. Golding is now a police constable.
