MAJESTIC THEATRE. “LIVING ON VELVET.” More thrills and unique situations are said to Live been packed into the First National picture, “Living on Velvet,” which opens at the Majestic Theatre to-night, than any picture that has been shown here for some time. There are unusual air manoeuvres with some of the maddest stunting imaginable by an airplane pilot, who plays the role of an airman supposed to be somewht “cracked” after a terrific accident in which he is the only one who escapes alive. His air escapades finally get him grounded, after which his speed mania brings him to grief in a crazed auto ride. There is unique romance in the story in which two friends love the same girl, but each does his best to give her to the other to make the woman happy. A.S.R.S. The Taihape branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants celebrated the golden jubilee of the society by holding a smoke concert in the Railway Hall on Saturday evening.

Mr. H. Cooper (president) presided and associated with him at the official table were the Mayor (Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour), the stationmaster (Mr. J. D. C. Davis), Mr. H. Hamilton (stores department, Wellington), Mr. John Quirk, Mr. C. L. Mullanv and Mr. W. J. Williams. 1 oasts were interspersed with social items and the time passed all too quickly. The evening was a great success from every point of view and concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne.” Amongst tho toasts honoured were the following: “The Railway Department,’’ proposed by the Mayor and responded to by the stationmaster, Mr. J. D. C. IDavis; “The A.5.R.5.,” proposed by Mr. G. A. Wilslier, who congratulated the society on fifty years of progress and briefly reviewed the chief activities of the society, and responded to by Mr. H. Cooper, who specially mentioned the work of the local secretary (Mr. .(,’. F. Dunn); “Kindred Societies,” proposed by Mr. Fennessy I and responded to by Mr. D. George (chairman E.F. and C.H.) and Mr. J. D. Davis (chairman R. 0.1.); “Sports Bodies,” proposed by Mr. C. L. MulJany and responded 'to by Mr. John Quirk: “Local Bodies,’’ proposed bv Mr. F. Molesworth (Ohakune) and responded to by the Mayor (Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour); “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr. P. Austin and responded to by Mr. J. Berry (Ohakune). Amongst those who contributed items were the following:—Melody Boys’ Orchestra, Messrs. F. McSweeney and Barnett (humorous recitation), G. A. Sherson, Hamilton, Fennessey (vocal solos). S. Dash and P. Marsh (pianoforte duets and solos). Community singing was led by Mr. G. A. Sherson.
