STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

COLLEGE STREET RESIDENCE LARGE HOLE IN ROOF CONSIDERABLE INTERIOR DAMAGE During the electiical aloin. which oc « •urred over Wanganui yesterday afternoon, a residence situated at 40 Colege Street was struck bv lightning. ■ A large hole was made in the roof when ' 15 tiles were shattered, and the interior j • f one room suffered considerable dam:ige. The top of a chimnev was also . •flattered. Fortunately, no one was at h''nir at the time. I The house received on.v slight exenor damage, but the room immcdiately below the shattered portion of rhe roof presented a scene of disorder when the <*ccupanis arrived home last evening. The effect was similar to hat of a sharp earthquake. Broken glass and smashed picture frames •'red the floor, while a heavy shotgun had been thrown in 15 feet away from its original position. The ceiling fittings of an electric light lamp were shifted several feet and the power »upplr for the entire house cut off. The telephone was also disconnected About a dozen lining-boards of the •oom were ripped from the wall for a distance of about six indie.-.. while three short boards were tors cam-,-reteiy away and thrown to the other -de of the room. No pictures were left hanging on the walls and a clock ( was removed from an upper shelf. It fell on to a dressing-table and stopped. Ko other rooms were damaged.
