"STORM SIGNAL"

JAPANESE WITHDRAWAL FOREIGN PRESS COMMENT WORLD'S BIG PROBLEMS LIE IN PACIFIC [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] LONDON, Jan. 16. The Continental Press continues to attach greater weight to the Japanese naval decision than London. The Berliner Tageblatt says that Japan’s withdrawal is a storm signal to the world. The Deuteche Allegemeine Zeitung says that the world’s important problems lie in the Pacific and their solution is becoming urgent. The Angriff says Japan’s step is a fresh indication of her intention to pun-ue her own policy, which, c-n the other hand, must lead to closer AngloAmerican co-operation in the Pacific. DESIRE TO CO-OPERATE TOKIO, Jan. 16. The .Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. K. Hirota, declared that although Japan had been compelled to withdraw from the Naval Conference she would continue to adhere to the spirit of disarmament and non-aggression. •‘Japan does not desire to start a 1 building race, but to continue to cooperate with other naval Powers, ’ he said. SIGNIFICANT STATEMENT LONDON, Jan. 16. The Tokio correspondent of the Times savs the only unexpected note in to-day’t Ministerial statements was the comment of General Kawashima, a member of the Supreme War Council, that the expiry of restrictions on Pacific fortifications would increase the army’s responsibility in national defence.
