.Meteorological Office, Wellington, Friday, January 17, 4 p.m. General Situation.—A deep westerly depression is crossing the Dominion. Pressure is rising over south-eastern Australia. Forecast.—Winds: Between north and xvest at first and strong to gale force, changing to southerlies shortly in the south and southerlies becoming general in about 24 to 30 hours. Seas (N.Z. waters): Rough tu high in the Cook and Foveaux Strait areas and rough on the west coast; elsewhere moderate to father rough but rising later on the east coast. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong southerly winds to gales and rough seas. Weather: Unsettled, with rain at times in most districts and some heavy falls in the west. Temperatures warm in the south.
