DOMINION BOWLING

RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP CANTERBURY FINALISTS TOURNEY AT CHRISTCHURCH [ Per Press Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 17. For the second time in the history of the rinks tournament a Christchurch team has won the Dominion championship. The Canterbury rink skipped by K. Haworth won the title this afternoon before near! 1000 spectators at the St. Albans green. The final was more interesting to Christchurch people because both of the teams in it were from city clubs, the defeated rink being from the Edgeware Club. The final g*ime provided good bowling without being spectacular. Away to an earlv lead the Canterbury rink held the advantage throughout. Edgeware did not once take the load, and only once, after a beautiful five on the fourteenth green, equalised, making the scores 14-all. Canterbury went ahead on the next six heads without a reverse to make the score 2.1—14 at the nineteenth. A leal of one at the next head gave Canterbury a lead of eight and the game ended. The final of the singles and the final three games in the pairs competition will be played at the bt. Albans green to-morrow and will end the tournament. The 1936 champion rink is; C. Elsom, J. Turpin, C. Shaw and IL Haworth (skip), of the Canterbury ('!- ’ The runner-up, the Edgeware rink, is follows: W. J. Clarke, S. Kennedy, A. W. Price and J. E. Gagliardi (skip). To-day was .the first time in the history of the tournament, extending oxer 22 years, in which two Chios from Canterbury have fought out the final of the rinks. The only two-life rink left in—the Dunedin Club’s with Anderson as skip—was twice beaten and was not in the final. | Extraordinary Scoring. In the rinks final Haworth led 14.—7 on the 14th head. The next two heads were won by Gagliardi with a two and a seven, equalising the scores. A single on the next head after close drawing by both rinks put Haworth again in the lead, and a three at the next saw him again in the lead, IS—l4, with three heads to be played. An extraordinarily good draw with Haworth’s last bowl and two unsuccesstul drives by Gagliardi on the 19th head laft the Canterbury another 3 up and the score was 21 —14 with two heads to play. Haworth’s drawing at this stage was exceptional and ho had the feel of the green to perfection. On the 20th head Haworth’s men had another one and the game was his, 22 —14. Exciting Singles. In one of the most exciting singles games that the tournament has produced Al ax well Walker (Auckland Club) was beaten by C. E. Hardley (West End Club, Auckland). Hardley took the lead in the early stages and half-way through the game, when he led 12—6, was definitely outplaying Walker. In the next few heads Walker played into his best form and four heads Infer had assumed the lead, 17—1-1. Singles were scored by Hardley on each of the last three heads and it was necessary to play an extra head to decide the match. When "Walker had his last bowl to play Hardley was lying two up. Walker’s drive struck both his opponent’s bowls and shifted them, but one nearer the kitty struck the other one and rebounded from it to a position nearer the kitty than it had been before, leaving Hardley one up and giving him the game. The following remain in the pairs: A. S. Afclnncs (’Temuka), S. Atorris : ■New South Wales), F. Livingstone! (Onohunga). and C E. Hardley '(West End, Auckland).
